Marbella, Málaga or Estepona: where to stay on the Costa del Sol
Three favourite bases on Spain's sunny south coast, each with its own character. Here's how to pick the one that suits your holiday.

The Costa del Sol in Andalusia is known for its sunny climate, long beaches and easy flights from the Netherlands. But where should you stay? Málaga, Marbella and Estepona are all within about an hour's drive of Málaga Airport, yet they feel completely different. Here's a quick guide to help you choose.
Málaga: culture, food and city life
Málaga is a real Spanish city with a lively old town, great tapas bars and plenty of culture. Picasso was born here, and you can visit the Museo Picasso, the Centre Pompidou Málaga and the Moorish Alcazaba fortress, all close to each other. The city beach, La Malagueta, is a short walk from the centre.
Best for: city trips, food lovers, couples and anyone who wants culture and beach in one. A city apartment close to the old town is the perfect base.
Marbella: glamour, beach clubs and golf
Marbella has two sides. The old town, with whitewashed streets, flower pots and the orange trees of Plaza de los Naranjos, is charming and relaxed. Along the coast you'll find stylish beach clubs, the luxury marina of Puerto Banús and some of Spain's best-known golf courses, with the Sierra Blanca mountains as a backdrop.
Best for: groups of friends, families who want space, golfers and anyone looking for a villa with a private pool.
Estepona: relaxed and authentic
A little further west, Estepona is quieter and more traditional. Its old town is known for streets full of colourful flower pots and large murals, and it's often called the garden of the Costa del Sol. There's a long seafront promenade, wide beaches and a laid-back atmosphere.
Best for: families, longer stays and travellers who want peace and quiet without being far from Marbella.
HomeMate tip: rent a car. The coast is well connected, and with your own wheels you can easily visit white villages like Mijas or Casares, or take a day trip to Ronda.
Getting there
Málaga Airport (AGP) is the gateway to the coast. By car it's about 20 minutes to Málaga city centre, around 45 minutes to Marbella and roughly an hour to Estepona. Málaga is also connected to Madrid by high-speed train.
Quick overview
- Málaga: city life, museums, tapas and a city beach
- Marbella: villas, beach clubs, golf and nightlife
- Estepona: quiet, authentic and family-friendly
